Psilocybin and psilocin are the main active ingredients in the psychedelic mushroom species Psilocybe cubensis. It is a member of the fungus family Hymenogastraceae and is also known as shrooms, magic mushrooms, golden halos, cubes, or gold caps. Its original name was Stropharia cubensis. Due to its widespread distribution and simplicity of growing, it is the most well-known psilocybin mushroom.
While the phrase “magic mushroom” has been given to hallucinogenic mushrooms generally, Psilocybe cubensis is most widely known as gold top, golden top, or gold cap in Australia, a sacred mushroom that translates to “mushroom that appears after a water buffalo’s feces,” is a well-known name in Thai.

The well-developed veil leaves behind a permanent white membranous ring, the surface of which typically changes to match the color of the gills due to spores that fall from the sky.
- The mushroom tastes bitter and has no smell.
- The spores are subellipsoid, 11.5–17.3 x 8–11.5 m, 4-spored, occasionally 2- or 3-spored basidia, and include pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia.
Availability and habitat
A pan-tropical species, Psilocybe cubensis is found in Mexico, the Gulf Coast and the Southeast United States, Belize, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, the Caribbean nations of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guadalupe, Martinique, and Trinidad, the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Peru, and Southeast Asia, where it is found in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Malay Peninsula.
Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms bloom from February to December in the northern hemisphere and from November to April in the southern hemisphere. They are found on cow (and rarely horse) dung, sugar cane mulch, or rich pasture soil.
The species thrives in Asia on the excrement of water buffalo.
- cubensis is one of the fungi that grows on cow excrement, and it is believed to have colonized Australia together with other fungi that do the same. By 1803, there were 1800 cattle on the Australian continent after being brought from the Cape of Good Hope, Kolkata, and the American west coast. The species can be found in Australia from northern Queensland to southern New South Wales.
Psilocybe cubensis Indoor Cultivation
Due to the favorable conditions that cattle give for the establishment of the fungus, Psilocybe cubensis naturally occurs in tropical and subtropical regions, frequently close to them. Psilocybe cubensis spores are typically found on grains or grass that the cow eats, and the fungus will start to grow in the excrement afterward.
Psilocybe cubensis is a common indoor mushroom that may be grown on a variety of substrates, including coffee, brown rice flour, sawdust, and straw. The best substrate for growing Psilocybe cubensis, according to some, is rye grain. It is advised to leave the container at room temperature or “case” it with dirt while growing mushrooms in a jar.
According to a 2009 study, mushrooms cultivated in low light had the lowest quantities of psilocybin and psilocin while those grown in bright, indirect light had the highest levels.
